Holgate Kick Off 25 Years of Beers in a Haze
The Crafty Pint, January 2024

It's set to be a huge year for the team at Holgate Brewhouse, with the Woodend brewery marking a quarter century of beers before 2024 is out. As part of their celebrations, they're releasing 25 limited release beers: some in cans and some just on tap; some new recipes with relevance to their story; some collaborations with past Holgate brewers now operating elsewhere; and one which readers of The Crafty Pint will get to play a role in selecting later in the year.

They're kicking off "25 Years Of Beers" with something old and something new. The former is Original Mt Macedon Ale, a kolsch inspired by the very first beer Paul Holgate brewed commercially 25 years ago, the latter is the first canned release of the series.

Cheers to 25 years of beers
Midland Express, 30 January 2023

Holgate Brewhouse is celebrating ’25 Years of Beers’ in 2024 with a year of special releases, collaborations and nationwide events.

“When you say it out loud, 25 years is a long time to be in business,” Paul Holgate said, “in any industry really, but particularly an industry like craft beer where both the producers and consumers are intensely passionate about the products.”

Best New Victorian Beers of 2021
The Crafty Pint, December 2021

You don’t see them around too often, they’re typically a tough enough sell to ensure brewers only release them in single batches, and if you described them as bridging beers suited for the seasonal transition either side of winter they wouldn’t take offence. But, boy, when done well, aren’t red IPAs delicious? The sort of coming together of rich malts, heaps of hops, and firm bitterness that baby beers probably look at and go: “That’s what I want to be when I grow up.”

We sampled a fair few crackers from Victorian brewers this year too. Holgate’s Campfire Red IPA was as spot on a take on the style as you could wish for (from a brewery that quietly carries on releasing spot on beers as it approaches its quarter century).

Macedon Ranges Shire council tells Holgate Brewhouse Woodend to get off the beers… after 5pm
Herald Sun, September 2021

A multimillion-dollar state government-backed brewery expansion designed to boost jobs and tourism in the Macedon Ranges is being hobbled after a handful of complaints to a local council.

Macedon Ranges Shire Council launched legal action against Holgate Brewhouse to limit service at the venue’s tap room after at least one local business owner complained about a lack of parking.

Hoppy Easter! Bring on the chocolate beers
Good Food, March 2021

Essential Easter survival tip: send the youngsters on a lengthy egg hunt, then settle down with some choice chocolate beers, brought to you by the yeaster bunny.

Many stouts and porters display deep chocolate notes simply from darkly roasted grains, while others go the full Willy Wonka with real chocolate and a bean-to-brew approach, pairing those earthy grains with single origin cacao you'd be delighted to find in the kind of bar that comes with a wrapper.

Holgate & Umberto Tivo Orange Sour
The Crafty Pint, Feb 2021

It's funny how some things stick with you. I don't really know what TiVo is, yet as soon as I heard about Holgate's beer of the same name, Tropic Thunder came to mind. Which, much like the film, is a red herring as the beer has nothing to do with that kind of TiVo and everything to do with recreating an aperitivo.

Twin Suns XPA
Beer & Brewer, Nov 2020

This isn't the first, or indeed second, time Holgate have put out a Star Wars-themed beer. In fact, it's not the first time they've put out a 5.5 percent XPA featuring an X-Wing on the labels either, with Twin Suns following in the vapour trails of X-Wing, which debuted in time for May 4 two years ago.

Holgate go from zero to hero with new releases
Beer & Brewer, Sep 2020

Victoria’s Holgate Brewhouse love playing with new trends as much as they forge their own path and their two new release beers perfectly sum that up.

On one hand you have Love All – Holgate’s core range entry into the increasingly popular 0.5% and under craft beer market – and on the other, the latest incarnation of their award-winning Hopinator – a 7.5% Double IPA that goes against the grain of the hyped juicy hop bombs of the moment.

Thirteen non-alcoholic beers that actually taste like the real thing
Broadsheet, Oct 2020

As you’ll see below, things have changed drastically and for the better over the past 12 months. Unlike their big-name predecessors, the beers below don’t use centrifuges, vacuum distillation or any other fancy technology to remove alcohol post-fermentation, just a lazybones yeast that creates very little alcohol in the first place (0.5 per cent – legally non-alcoholic). If you believe the brewers, this method retains more flavour.
