Step in from the main street of Woodend and immerse yourself in the warmth and spirit of a true local. Take time to unwind in an historic country corner pub, where you can enjoy fine restaurant cuisine and award-winning craft beer brewed on site and available on tap.
At Holgate Brewhouse, we pride ourselves in being a non-gaming venue. Relax with friends and family in a welcoming, friendly atmosphere – free from bleeps, blips and garish screens. Listen to some cool background music. Kick back and explore the flavours of Holgate’s masterful range of ales and lagers. Or try a superb wine from the many local Macedon Ranges wineries.
Tuck into a great value pub meal at the bar, or settle in and enjoy the flavours and local produce of our popular restaurant menu. Claim your favourite spot in the sunny dining room, classic main bar, snug parlour bar, or cosy lounge. In the summer, you can gaze out to the village clock tower from our shady outside courtyard. And in the depths of a Woodend winter, there’s five log fires to keep you toasty!
At Holgate Brewhouse we pride ourselves on providing a great dining experience – simple food prepared perfectly, in a stylish yet relaxed restaurant setting, with friendly and attentive service. We provide full table service in our dining rooms and more casual service in our unreserved areas – bar, lounge & courtyard.
Our modern Australian menu is designed and prepared in the hotel kitchen by a team of excellent chefs under the keen eye of Restaurateur Natasha Holgate. We use only the best of locally available meats like sausages and venison, as well fresh local produce and ingredients.
We encourage our guests to have fun matching beer and food. All main meals come with a suggested Holgate beer to complement your dining experience. And our chefs have created many of the dishes on the menu around distinctive beer flavours - for example, our popular beer bread and awesome Beef & Ale Pie.
All our desserts are conceived and made in-house, so it’s worth leaving a little bit of room!

Paul Holgate first came across the “tasting flight” concept when visiting US pub-breweries in the late 1990s – and reckoned it was a must-have for the Holgate Brewhouse bar. Now a ubiquitous fixture at most breweries there is no better way than the paddle to get acquainted with the delicious flavours and diverse styles of Holgate’s exquisite range of beers. Tasting paddles are the perfect way to sample the rich complexity and full breadth of taste, texture and aroma that genuine, hand-made craft beer offers.
With 8 Holgate beers on tap, tasting paddles present 8x90ml samples of each. Sip and savour, judge and comment. Compare notes with your partner or buddies. Choose your favourite brew or maybe discover something entirely new.
HAND PUMPED ALE
We're damn proud of our ales and English beer engines are the only way to serve them. Beer engines draw from kegs in the cellar under the bar in the time-honoured English tradition and it’s pretty rare to find them these days. There’s only a handful of authentic beer engines in all of Australia!
What's so special? Flavour. And plenty of it. It’s like the difference between a plunger coffee and an espresso.
For starters, the ale is not overly fizzed or gassy like most modern beers – which allows the flavour to fully appreciated as they roll around your tongue. Whatever fizz is there, has been gently absorbed into the beer during secondary fermentation stage in our fermentation tanks - this gas is trapped in the beer, generating the fine head which gently releases the aroma as you drink Secondly, the Ale’s served on our hand-pumps are non-filtered – maintaining every essence and drop of flavour from the original recipe. Lastly, although the ale kegs are chilled in the cool room, the beer lines and beer pump are not – so the beer is served to you at the perfect quaffing temperature of about 8°C.
Together with the action of pumping, a fine dense head is produced and the low CO2 lets you experience the full flavour of the beer. The density of the head allows the ale’s creamy quality to come to the fore. There’s a sense of fullness on the tongue
You’ll taste the difference.
Holgate Brewhouse serves ESB and Temptress Chocolate Porter by beer-engine all year round.
